CATL, DHL partner to accelerate European road freight electrification

Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL) and logistics giant DHL have signed a new cooperation agreement focused on advancing the electrification of road freight across Europe.

The partnership spans three key areas: electric trucks, charging infrastructure development and battery-swapping pilot projects. The initiative is designed to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions from the European freight sector, where heavy-duty transport remains one of the hardest segments to decarbonize.

DHL, already a major adopter of electric delivery vehicles worldwide, is looking to extend its zero-emission ambitions to heavier road-freight operations. CATL's involvement brings battery technology and swapping capabilities that could help overcome one of the biggest barriers to truck electrification — long refueling times and limited driving range on heavy loads.

Charging and swapping infrastructure

Under the pact, both companies will work on building out charging infrastructure tailored to heavy-duty electric trucks, as well as testing battery-swap stations along key freight corridors. Battery swapping allows trucks to exchange depleted packs for charged ones in minutes rather than waiting hours for a fast charge, potentially improving vehicle utilization rates significantly.

The collaboration signals growing interest among European logistics firms in alternative recharging methods beyond plug-in fast charging, particularly for applications where downtime directly impacts delivery schedules.

Broader industry context

Europe has set ambitious emissions targets for commercial vehicles, and several automakers are racing to bring electric and hybrid heavy trucks to market. CATL has been expanding its European footprint with battery-production facilities in Hungary, positioning itself closer to both automakers and fleet operators across the continent.

The DHL-CATL partnership comes as the logistics industry faces mounting pressure to meet tightening EU climate regulations while maintaining operational efficiency.
