CATL maintained its dominance of China's power battery market in August 2026, but ceded some ground to rival BYD, which widened the distance between itself and the industry leader.
According to industry data, CATL captured 41.45% of domestic battery installations in August, down from its previous months' shares. BYD (excluding its own vehicle brand, including externally supplied batteries) rose to 20.98%, reflecting strong demand for its Blade Battery from both its own NEV lineup and third-party automakers.
The narrowing gap underscores intensifying competition in China's EV battery sector, where scale and vertical integration increasingly determine market position. CATL continues to benefit from its broad customer base spanning domestic and international brands, while BYD's dual role as both battery supplier and vehicle manufacturer gives it a unique advantage in absorbing production internally.
Battery installations in China are closely tracked as a leading indicator of NEV production and sales trends. August data typically reflects summer delivery patterns and any last-minute pushes ahead of quarterly targets.
