BYD Recalls Over 183,000 Tang and Qin Vehicles for Brake Pedal Defect

Chinese EV giant BYD has announced a recall affecting 183,211 older models of its Tang SUV and Qin sedan across unspecified markets, citing a defect in the brake pedal stopper assembly.

The recall centers on a component failure risk: the brake pedal stoppers on these vehicles may break and detach over time. If this occurs, the brake lights can remain illuminated even when the driver is not pressing the brake pedal.

A continuously illuminated brake light pose a safety concern, as it can confuse following drivers and potentially mask genuine braking signals in emergency situations. It may also trigger diagnostic trouble codes and fail vehicle inspections in markets with strict emissions and safety checks.

BYD has not yet released a detailed timeline for the recall or specified which model years and production batches are affected. The company has not announced whether affected owners will be notified directly or if service appointments will open immediately.

The Tang and Qin are among BYD's longest-running model families. The Tang, a mid-size SUV available in both pure-electric and plug-in hybrid configurations, has been on sale since 2015. The Qin sedan, also offered in BEV and PHEV variants, debuted in 2014 and remains a volume contributor in BYD's lineup.

This recall underscores ongoing quality scrutiny facing Chinese NEV makers as their vehicle parc grows and models age. While BYD has generally maintained strong quality reputations, older batches of high-volume models can develop recurring issues that only surface after extended real-world use.
