XPeng Plans to Expand Tech Partnerships Beyond Volkswagen

Chinese electric-vehicle maker XPeng is planning to expand its technology partnership offerings to additional overseas automakers, broadening beyond its current collaboration with Volkswagen.

The company's strategy to license its intelligent-driving and smart-cockpit technologies to foreign brands began gaining traction with the Volkswagen investment and partnership announced in 2024. The deal includes the use of XPeng's EE architecture and smart-driving software in Volkswagen-branded compact EVs developed in China.

According to reports, several unnamed overseas manufacturers have shown interest in similar collaborations, prompting XPeng to explore additional licensing deals as it seeks to monetize its technology stack beyond its own vehicle sales.

XPeng's approach mirrors a growing trend among Chinese NEV makers, who are increasingly offering their accumulated expertise in battery management, autonomous driving and vehicle platforms to international partners — turning R&D investment into a new revenue stream even as domestic competition intensifies.

XPeng has not yet disclosed which additional automakers are in discussions or the terms of any potential deals.
