Top 10 China August Sales Are All Pure EVs for the First Time
August's domestic retail sales ranking shows all ten best-selling cars are pure electric, as NEV penetration hits a record 65.2% while ICE sales tumble 40% year over year.

China's August passenger-car retail sales ranking has been swept entirely by pure electric vehicles for the first time this year, marking a structural shift in the world's largest auto market.
The top-ten list published Sept. 9 by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) contains zero internal-combustion-engine (ICE) models and zero plug-in hybrids — the first time pure EVs have filled every slot since NEVs began dominating the榜 earlier this year.
August Top 10: All BEV
Geely Xingyuan took the crown with 39,651 units, followed by Leapmotor A10 at 30,652 and Tesla Model Y at 29,260. The remainder: BYD Yuan UP, Tesla Model 3, Changan Qiyuan Q05, Li Auto i6, BYD Dolphin, Xiaomi SU7, and Wuling Bingo Pro.
The spread now covers multiple price bands and brand camps — Geely, Leapmotor, Tesla, BYD, Changan, Li Auto, Xiaomi, and Wuling — suggesting the NEV头部 is no longer propped up solely by cheap sub-$15,000 city cars.
ICE Sinks Faster Than EVs Grow
NEV retail reached 1.005 million units in August, down 10.1% year over year. The overall passenger-car market fell 23.6% to 1.541 million. Conventional ICE retail totaled roughly 540,000, plunging 40% — with pure ICE down 45% and mild hybrids up 10%.
The near-30-point gap between NEV and ICE declines pushed the NEV penetration rate to 65.2%, a new record and up 9.9 percentage points from August 2025. In practical terms, roughly 65 of every 100 cars sold in China last month were新能源.
From Oil-Electric Race to EV-vs-EV Battle
The trajectory this year has been steep. In January, ICE models occupied seven of the top-ten slots; by April only one remained (Geely BinYue). May saw the first all-NEV top ten, though that list included plug-in hybrids. By August the distinction vanished — every slot belongs to BEV.
Fuel vehicles staged brief comebacks in June (Toyota Camry, Volkswagen Lavida) and July (Toyota Corolla Cross), but slipped back to zero in August.
Analysts note the pattern reflects structural substitution rather than sheer NEV volume growth. The "golden September, silver October" peak-selling season ahead will test whether the all-BEV top ten has become the new normal or remains a seasonal artifact.
