BMW Shenyang Plant Uses AI Inspection to Back iX3 Battery Quality
BMW's Shenyang facility deploys AI visual inspection across all production stages and runs a dedicated quality loop for sixth-gen batteries, enabling the new iX3 to exceed 800km real-world range.

BMW is turning its Shenyang production base into a blueprint for AI-driven quality control with the new-generation iX3. The plant has folded artificial-intelligence visual inspection into every major manufacturing stage and built a dedicated, end-to-end quality loop for its sixth-generation battery pack.
Inside the stamping shop, a self-developed AI vision system combined with a digital-twin platform scans every panel in milliseconds. It flags surface defects and dimensional deviations in real time, sending data to a virtual model that pinpoints exactly where a flaw originated. The team behind the system recently received the "National Worker Pioneer" award from the All-China Federation of Trade Unions.
The AI inspection approach extends beyond stamping. Across body-in-white, paint, and final assembly, the same technology monitors weld quality, adhesive application, part fitment and anti-corrosion coating thickness. An AI-based predictive maintenance system watches equipment health, while autonomous guided vehicles coordinate logistics — all part of BMW's iFACTORY concept as it is realized in Shenyang.
The most visible payoff comes from the powertrain side. BMW's Shenyang powertrain facility has spent nine years and three battery generations building out a complete capability chain for production-grade cells. For the sixth-generation pack it uses the first mass-produced large cylindrical cell in the Chinese market, built on a 9-series high-nickel chemistry and a cell-to-pack layout that maximizes packaging density. A full 800-volt architecture underpins the integration.
Battery safety gets a multi-layer treatment: thermal barrier material between cells, a high-stiffness outer enclosure and continuous real-time monitoring by the battery management system. Every pack must pass BMW's global functional and safety validation before it leaves the plant, with all results logged on the digital-twin platform for full lifecycle traceability.
That rigor shows up in real-world numbers. BMW says the domestic new-generation iX3 has recorded over 800 km of range in a Qinghai Lake driving loop and posted an internal benchmark of 1,030.2 km without recharging — both figures set under controlled test conditions rather than certified WLTP cycles.
On the safety side, the new iX3 earned a five-star rating under the 2026 Euro NCAP protocol, covering crash protection, active avoidance aids, human-machine interaction and post-crash rescue. During development, BMW also carried out cold-weather, high-altitude and high-humidity calibration sweeps across China to keep energy consumption consistent in every climate.
Supply-chain partners are locked into the same traceability standards. Glass maker Fuyao and automotive-electronics supplier Faurecia Hella are co-developing components such as nano-coated windshields and heated elements in the digital headlight signature, with part-level inspection held to the same bar as the finished vehicle.
The takeaway is straightforward: by embedding AI inspection in stamping, welding, painting and assembly, and by wrapping the sixth-generation battery in a dedicated quality circuit from cell to final validation, BMW is trying to make long-term reliability measurable rather than aspirational for the new iX3.
