BYD carsEVs is reporting that its Fangchengbao sub-brand will launch an updated plug-in hybrid variant of the Tai 7 SUV on August 18, promising a longer electric-only range than the current model.

The existing Fangchengbao Tai 7 plug-in hybrid offers up to 200 km of battery-only range. The updated "long-range" version, badged as Tai 7 DM, is expected to extend that figure, though BYD has not yet disclosed specific range or battery capacity numbers for the new model.

Fangchengbao, launched by BYD in 2023, targets the off-road and adventure-oriented NEV segment. The brand already includes the Yangwang U8 and the Bao 5 (also known as the Fangchengbao 5), both positioned as rugged plug-in hybrids aimed at China's growing appetite for capable off-roaders with electrified powertrains.

The Tai 7 DM update follows a common strategy among Chinese automakers — introducing mid-cycle refreshes with incremental improvements in range, charging speed, and feature set rather than a full redesign. Consumers looking for a Fangchengbao vehicle with more all-electric driving distance between fuel stops are likely to weigh the new model's real-world figures carefully against the outgoing version.

No pricing details have been released for the long-range Tai 7 DM. Industry watchers expect BYD to position it competitively within the plug-in hybrid SUV segment, where brands such as Li Auto, AITO, and Geely's Denza are also vying for buyers seeking extended electric range in an off-road package.
