Nio has reaffirmed its commitment to the European market, with CEO William Li holding meetings with users and partners to discuss the company's overseas strategy.
During the discussions, Nio confirmed that its Onvo sub-brand is set to enter international markets. A European debut is currently expected in 2028-2029, according to the company.
Onvo, formerly known as Firefly, was introduced as Nio's more affordable brand targeting the mass-market segment. The brand has been developed specifically for global expansion beyond China, with a focus on compact electric vehicles priced below Nio's main lineup.
Nio has been working to strengthen its presence in Europe since launching in Norway in 2021. The company operates in several European countries including Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, and the Netherlands, though it has faced intensifying competition from Tesla, Volkswagen, and emerging Chinese rivals.
The delay of Onvo's European launch to 2028-2029 comes as Nio continues to refine its charging infrastructure and battery-swap network in key European markets. The company's primary Nio brand already offers swap stations in several European countries, giving it a differentiation advantage over other Chinese EV exporters.
