At the 2026 Global Sustainable Leaders Conference held in Shanghai on October 20, Geely Galaxy Xingyao 6 EF served as the official designated vehicle, shuttling over 300 political figures, business leaders, and experts from around the world.

The sedan represents a tangible showcase for methanol electrification — an alternative fuel technology Geely has been developing for nearly two decades. With over 60,000 methanol vehicles now on the road and cumulative mileage exceeding 25 billion kilometers, the company has built one of the largest real-world methanol fleets globally.

Powertrain and fuel flexibility

The Xingyao 6 EF is a plug-in hybrid equipped with a methanol-gasoline dual-fuel system. It accepts any blend from 0 to 100% methanol mixed directly into the same tank, with refueling taking approximately three minutes. The powertrain combines a 1.5-liter methanol-specific engine (93 kW) with P1+P3 dual electric motors delivering 163 PS and 210 N·m, all integrated into an 11-in-1 single-speed DHT gearbox.

Battery options come in two LFP capacities: 17 kWh (130 km pure electric range) and 28.3 kWh (230 km). DC fast charging reaches 78 kW, covering 30–80% in roughly 15 minutes. The system also supports 6.6 kW AC slow charging and 6 kW V2L external discharge.

Range figures

In CLTC testing, the Xingyao 6 EF achieves a combined range of 1,250 km on full methanol plus charge, and 1,880 km on full gasoline plus charge — figures that compete with conventional long-range hybrids while burning a significantly cheaper fuel in the right conditions.

Running costs

Geely highlights the vehicle's economics as a key selling point. At a depleted state of charge, methanol consumption sits at 6.9 L/100 km. Based on China's methanol price of approx. $0.37/L (RMB 2.65), running on methanol costs roughly $0.028/km — about a quarter of the cost per kilometer of pure electric operation at current Chinese electricity rates.

The 230 km pure-electric variant is positioned as sufficient for most urban commuters' weekly needs, making it particularly attractive for ride-hailing operators and households with limited charging access.

Methanol infrastructure

Geely currently operates 1,228 "Yuan Chun" methanol refueling stations across China and plans to reach 4,000 by the end of 2027, a scale that underpins the practicality of its methanol portfolio.

The Xingyao 6 EF's ability to start reliably at temperatures down to -40°C also extends its utility to China's northern regions, where conventional plug-in hybrids often struggle with cold-weather battery performance.

The vehicle is expected to go on sale in the near term, positioning itself as one of the first mass-produced methanol plug-in hybrids aimed directly at the family sedan segment.
