Nio Inc. has seen one of its top technology executives depart for a new venture in embodied robotics. Ren Shaoqing, who led the EV maker's autonomous driving efforts, is reportedly the founder of a new robotics company that may have already secured funding.
Ren joined Nio in 2017 and built the company's self-driving program from the ground up, overseeing the development of Nio's battery-swap-friendly ADAS platform and its NOP+ (Navigate on Pilot) system. His departure marks a significant shift for Nio's intelligent-driving roadmap as the company faces intensifying competition from XPENG, Li Auto and Huawei-backed AITO in China's increasingly crowded smart-vehicle market.
A New Chapter in Robotics
Embodied robotics — the fusion of AI software with physical machines that can interact with the real world — has emerged as one of the hottest sectors in Chinese tech. Several high-profile startups have entered the space in recent years, backed by investors seeking to replicate the success of U.S. firms like Tesla's Optimus in the humanoid-robot market.
Ren's move into the sector positions him at the intersection of two of the most capital-intensive tech fields in China today: autonomous driving and robotics. Both rely heavily on similar technology stacks — advanced sensors, neural-network-based perception, and real-time decision-making algorithms.
Leadership Changes at Nio
Nio has not yet publicly confirmed Ren's exit. The company is expected to announce a successor to lead its autonomous driving division in the coming weeks. In the interim, the team will continue work on Nio's next-generation smart-driving hardware and software, which the company has said will be deployed across its refreshed product lineup starting in 2025.
