China's first charging station purpose-built to be "grid-friendly" for heavy-duty electric trucks has begun operations, the State Grid announced.

Tech specs

The station features six dedicated heavy-truck parking bays equipped with 12 high-power charging terminals. Each connector delivers a maximum output of 800 kW, meaning a truck with a 450 kWh battery pack can reach full charge in approximately 15 to 20 minutes.

The six bays are divided into three technology-equipped zones: a DC microgrid flexible-charging area, a high-efficiency high-power charging area, and a pre-installed integrated charging area. The site also incorporates quantum battery safety detection, zero-power standby mode, and flexible grid-adaptation technology.

Grid support

What sets the station apart is its ability to interact with the power grid rather than simply draw from it. Through innovations such as medium-voltage direct connection, solid-state transformers, and flexible power scheduling, the facility can smooth charging-related load fluctuations, manage harmonics, and actively participate in peak shaving and frequency regulation.

State Grid described the hub as the country's first "one type, six capabilities" electric heavy-truck high-power charging station — a grid-friendly hub whose power output is adjustable and controllable, energy is storable and consumable, and which can both support and stabilize the grid.

The demonstration project is expected to provide a blueprint for future high-power charging infrastructure and gather operational experience to support the scale-up of electric heavy trucks and low-carbon transition in the transport sector.
