July exports break the million-unit mark

China exported 1.043 million automobiles in July, up 0.6% from June and surging 81.3% year-on-year, according to data released by the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM).

The result marks the second consecutive month that China has cleared the one-million-unit threshold, following June's milestone. Since April and May both surpassed 900,000 units, the pace has only accelerated.

NEVs lead the charge

New energy vehicles accounted for 553,000 of the July exports — a 5.7% monthly gain and a dramatic 145.5% jump from the same period last year. NEVs have now exceeded 50% of total auto exports for two straight months, signaling a fundamental shift in what the world buys from China.

Export value breaks seasonal patterns

In dollar terms, July's complete vehicle exports reached approx. $19 billion, up 60% year-on-year and 4% month-on-month. This breaks a recurring pattern seen in 2023 through 2025, when July export values typically fell slightly below May levels.

For the first seven months of 2026, total auto export value reached approx. $110.8 billion, a 55% increase over the same period last year.

Broadening global reach

The data underscores China's growing dominance in global auto exports, particularly in electrified powertrains. Industry analysts note that Chinese NEV makers have expanded rapidly across Europe, Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Latin America, driving both volume and value higher.
