Volkswagen has paused development of the electric ID. Golf, halting work on the EV successor to its most iconic model as part of a broader cost-cutting drive at its core brand.
The decision was first reported by German newspaper Handelsblatt and confirmed alongside the company's nine-month results on October 30. Volkswagen brand chief financial officer David Powels told analysts that "one specific measure is therefore to temporarily pause development work on the future ID. Golf," adding that the company will resume when it can "securely allocate the necessary investments."
In an internal memo seen by Reuters, Volkswagen brand CEO Thomas Schäfer wrote: "I know what the Golf means for Volkswagen and for Wolfsburg. We simply can't afford this work right now."
The ID. Golf was expected to be a flagship model built on Volkswagen's new Scalable Systems Platform (SSP). The company has described the pause as temporary but has not provided a timeline for when development will resume. The works council told Reuters that any lost time could be made up later.
The move comes amid significant financial pressure on Volkswagen's core brand. Net cash flow for the first nine months of the year fell sharply from €4.34 billion to €1.43 billion, while operating profit declined from €4.72 billion to €4.33 billion, according to Reuters. The automaker's Wolfsburg plant is also running approximately €300 million behind its annual cost target.
The current combustion-engine Golf remains one of Volkswagen's best-selling models worldwide, making the ID. Golf's fate all the more consequential for the brand's electrification strategy.
