Li Auto is reportedly hiring an expert in world-model development to lead its robot AI efforts, a sign the Chinese new-energy vehicle maker is deepening its push into robotics and advanced artificial intelligence.
The specialist will oversee the development of robot foundation models — large-scale AI systems that form the backbone for autonomous movement, perception and decision-making in humanoid and other robots. The team is planned to remain below 50 people, suggesting a lean, focused approach rather than a broad hiring spree.
World-model technology has become a key frontier in AI, enabling machines to build internal representations of how the physical world works and use those models to plan actions. The approach has drawn attention from both the autonomous-driving and robotics industries, with several major technology companies investing heavily in the capability.
For Li Auto, the move aligns with its broader strategy to advance intelligent driving and smart-cockpit technologies. The company has been building its self-driving capabilities in-house and has rolled out city NOA features across a growing number of Chinese cities. Adding robot foundation-model expertise suggests the firm may be eyeing applications beyond passenger vehicles.
The recruitment comes at a time when several Chinese automakers are exploring robotics as a natural extension of their autonomous-driving and AI work. Humanoid robots share core technological requirements with self-driving cars — perception, planning, and real-time decision-making — making the talent overlap significant.
Li Auto has not officially confirmed the hire. Details about the candidate's background and specific role were not immediately available.
