A German entry in China's hot PHEV sedan market

At the 2026 Chengdu International Auto Show, SAIC Volkswagen launched the ID. ERA 5S, a plug-in hybrid sedan aimed squarely at the 100,000–150,000 RMB (~$13,900–$20,800) family-car segment. The brand is offering a limited-time promotional price of 89,900 RMB (approx. $12,486) for the base trim and 119,900 RMB (approx. $16,653) for the Max version, along with a lifetime powertrain warranty.

The ID. ERA 5S positions itself against two of China's best-selling PHEV sedans: the BYD Seal 06 DM-i and the Geely Galaxy Xingyao 7 MAX. All three share similar dimensions and target the same family-buyer profile, but each car emphasizes a different set of strengths.

City NOA in a sub-$17,000 car

SAIC Volkswagen says the ID. ERA 5S is the first Volkswagen sedan globally to support city navigation-on-autopilot. The system, branded "Xingyun Zhixing," runs on a Horizon Journey chip with a custom HSD algorithm stack and a one-segment end-to-end large model, delivering what the company calls L2++-level assisted driving.

Features cover the full parking-to-driving spectrum: highway NOA, urban stop-and-go assistance, memory parking, valet parking, remote parking, trace-back reversing and narrow-road assist. The company claims the AEB system can brake from speeds up to 140 km/h.

For many buyers in this price bracket, city NOA has been unavailable outside premium models — making the ID. ERA 5S a notable entry point.

Chassis, body and durability

The ID. ERA 5S uses a MacPherson front / multi-link rear suspension tuned to Volkswagen's German standards. SAIC Volkswagen says 86 percent of the body is high-strength steel, with 30 percent hot-formed steel, and the front anti-rail is also hot-formed. The rear crash beam is 3 mm thick, and the doors include longitudinal anti-crash tubes and hooks. Seven airbags (Pro and Max trims), a 2.1-meter full-length side-curtain airbag and a 39-liter center airbag are fitted.

Durability validation exceeds 100,000 km — roughly three times the Chinese national standard — equivalent to about 300,000 km of real-world use. The car survived two winters and two summers of testing from −40 °C to +50 °C across 30,000 km of extreme-road evaluation. SAIC Volkswagen offers a 15-year / 300,000 km reliability promise and a lifetime warranty on the complete vehicle.

Powertrain and efficiency

The PHEV powertrain centres on a 1.5-litre engine developed exclusively for SAIC Volkswagen's hybrid line, featuring a 16:1 compression ratio, dual VVT and a high-swirl intake port. It is paired with an 18-in-1 integrated hybrid transmission delivering a stated electric-drive综合 efficiency of 93.4 percent.

SAIC Volkswagen claims the ID. ERA 5S is the lowest-consumption model in the Volkswagen lineup. Depleted-fuel (no charge) consumption is rated at 2.82 L/100 km, with a combined range exceeding 2,000 km. China Automotive Technology and Research Centre实测 figures show a combined range of 2,033.8 km, an pure-electric CLTC range of 207.5 km and a综合 fuel consumption of just 1.25 L/100 km — earning a Class-1 energy-efficiency certificate.

Interior and space

The cabin measures 1,879 mm in width, with 35 storage locations and a 486-litre boot (456 L above the floor, 30 L underneath). A panoramic星空 glass roof is fitted as standard. Seats use OEKO-TEX Standard 100-certified fabrics and the dash has passed a 120 °C, 1,200-hour ageing test.

A 15.6-inch infotainment display supports four-screen interconnection, hand-phone linking across all major brands and an AI voice assistant.

Competitors at a glance

The BYD Seal 06 DM-i (4,870 mm long, 2,820 mm wheelbase) offers a 550-litre boot, 50 W wireless charging, a W-HUD, BYD's "Eye of the Gods" B-level ADAS and the fifth-generation DM technology — delivering a CLTC pure-electric range of 230 km and an NEDC depleted-fuel figure of 2.59 L/100 km. It carries a blade battery and seven airbags.

The Geely Galaxy Xingyao 7 MAX (4,958 mm long, 2,852 mm wheelbase) steps up to an e-AWD layout, a 雷神 EM hybrid engine rated at 47.26 percent thermal efficiency, a CLTC pure-electric range of 230 km, a 2.98 L/100 km depleted-fuel figure, and Geely's Qianli Haohan H3 ADAS solution with highway NOA and memory-parking functions. Boot space is 541 litres.

Early demand signals

SAIC Volkswagen reported strong weekend sales after launch, with test-drive schedules running tight at dealers nationwide. About 20 percent of buyers are under 30, over 35 percent are families aged 30–39, and nearly 40 percent are women. More than 60 percent chose the Max trim with city NOA, according to the company. Leading markets were Zhengzhou, Jinan, Chongqing and Chengdu.
